The UN report says that sexual assaults on captives has occurred, yep. What it doesn't allege is any systematic element to that.

As plagiarize noted before, if we're just saying that, captives have been raped by their captors while being held in captivity constitutes sex slavery, then it's completely fair to say that the US operates a vast system of prisons which includes sex slavery, because there is absolutely no denying that there are incidents of prison guards raping inmates in US prisons.

But to say "the US prison system" involves sex slavery is to intimate that there is a systematic element to that. That forcible rape of prisoners is a systematized and formalized part of the penal system, above and beyond mere individual incidents of said rapes that are not encouraged by the penal system at large.

The UN report that some captives have been raped, yes, absolutely, but to say that Hamas is engaging in sex slavery requires some level of systematized rape and not just incidents of some captors having raped their captives.

This is kinda an ongoing thing right now because the slippery logic that you're using is the same logic that the New York Times is currently trying to employ to backstop some highly disputed reporting that alleged specifically Hamas using weaponizing rape and systematically raping Israelis based off a bunch of now-debunked evidence.

The longer this goes on the clearer it becomes that the current moderation team/strategy essentially equates to just being cops.

You've got your beat/threads that you frequent and pop into every so often, even make nice with the regulars. But as soon as there is a community crisis you protect your own, doubling and tripling down in the face of legitimate community backlash.

Fucking disappointing, man. Disappointing.

A lot of people citing that quote out of context and then trying to use it to jump down Nepenthe's throat here.

Someone took a bit of a post talking about the history of the state of Israel that included that it's only been around since 1948 and tried to do the "actually you see there's Israel the nation state and then there's also Israel as not an actual nation-state but the collective nation of Jewish people" and Nepenthe's post there is like "yeah, and neither one of them has a justification for committing genocide".

Go back and read the discussion. There was a dialogue distinguishing between the nation state and the Jewish nation at large. What there was FUCKING NOT was ANY mention of that Jewish nation COMMITTING GENOCIDE. It was a fucked-up swerve, it was jarring, creepy, and any of us who criticized it got jumped all over by mods in full defense mode. In the community thread, critics of the post were yelled at more, accused of being motivated by anything but a plain reading of the conversation, and warned never to bring it up again.

Like others have said, the repeated standard is nuance for mods; zero charity for users.

So, you can only be a sex slave if it's officially systemized by the people perpetrating the act? If so, I'm sure the people who were sex slaves unsystematically would love to hear the "well aktually..." If you're in prison, and you're raped by the fucking people who run the prison... it's PART OF THE PENAL SYSTEM.

People were asking for an explanation for why we banned Brady. I shared one because i genuinely felt you deserved one, and because i genuinely felt the ban message didn't go far enough to highlight the problem. People disagreed with our reasoning. I stood by it. I really don't know what else I can do at this point.

Next time I will think twice before volunteering to try and shine some light on why we banned someone because nothing constructive came of it. It certainly doesn't feel like anyone here appreciated my efforts to explain how the mod team saw things.

Appreciate what? Someone who refused to listen to the receipts being shown with a UN REPORT showing sexual violence fitting the UN DEFINITION of sexual slavery for the Hamas attacks and hostage taking?

What do you want? A medal? Moderation is a thankless task, but this isn't something to go on a sympathy tour on, you could and should have listened to those telling you that what you were claiming was a distinction without a difference and were basically handwaving the situation for god knows why. You do not win any progressive points for going "but actually" on sexual violence and the flailing between reasons, including claiming islamophobia as a potential motivation for someone to speak out against it is absurd and the team decisions here need to reviewed immediately.

Not to mention how, yet again, instead of process and outcome being in review here, we're yet again turning it into a battle of personality because god forbid the continued pattern of obfuscated moderation and lack of clarity on this ban and antisemitic posts just is refused to be addressed.
