20 years back, i was really young & had experienced homelessness in miami (and was barely out of it) and wanted to honor a promise to a local catholic church to help keep folks out of it. i was actively repaying a debt to a local catholic church, and they had great networks with other small parishes to make sure our overtown/downtown homeless population was cared for

we had a really good setup in the early aughst; there were so many local churches/parishes that we could pick days of the week to show up, knowing that we’d pick up the slack left by rescue mission/camilla’s house back then. probelm was, city of miami gov’t was, by nature, hyperfocused on emulating NY politics, and not enough folks back then knew what a monster giulliani was, so his policies were emulated by an entity super hyped to attract money laundering/gentrifying developers at the cost of local undesireables, and so the law went

what this became was,they saw a robust network able to respond to mass post 9-11 homelessess as “enabling” and started practicing law as such: because a system that provided food & clothing faster than would-be donors could, they imported a rule that said only orgs/churches “approved” could show up once a month. this of course ruined what we had in short order, and funneled folks into systems that were faith-based, drug-tested (ugh) and said if they didn’t meet the criteria without mental health/etc access, they were legally on their own. i can’t stress enough how many “lawful good” liberals i’ve seen since then that don’t deserve any response beyond disdain

since most of our feeds were at the mixmaster downtown (shady area where the highways meet, kinda central) were now heavily monitored by pigs, this went from a safe place to unteneable real quick. worse yet, as this law deigned - saying any group faith-based or not could only lawfully show up once a month - it made a situation where most small parishes couldn’t afford to come out without creating a scene by not having enough means to provide for a crowd.

a few of us were dedicated to buck this new trend, so we established trade networks with said smaller parishes to at least show up once a month with enough food & clothes for as many folks as we could find. i was pretty young, but still connected enough to youth scenes to know that we had a huge untapped resource with a recently passed bill forcing high school kids to complete a certain # of community service hours, and this church was in an area of a ton of spoiled wealthy kids (palmetto) so when it all came together, we had literally dozens of helpers instead of a small handful of us

….but it didn’t matter. we showed up right on time at the mixmaster, and one dude was there. he told us a count official came out an hour ago saying “no one’s coming, because homelessness is outlawed now - go back to your shelters to avoid arrest” and pretty much everyone did. i begged our local decon to let me distribute what we’d made from the back of my truck, but he couldn’t risk trouble for the parish under this new law, so after whatever i could fit in tupperware for my apartment complex, the rest had to be dumped, and that was that

that was a key night to my radicalization. all that effort to make sure folks went hungry/unaided, because capitalism needs them to keep the working class in line. it’d be years later when ferguson pushed me back towards anarchism fully, but i can’t stress enough how much the lack of class solidarity (read: san fran) leads a lot of temporarily well-treated techbros to believe they’re somehow closer to elon than the undesirables on their block. they’ll come around when AI/automation reaches their door, but the amount of folks sacrificed in the name of miami developer dollars is staggering, and i truly hope there’s a reckoning with this one day

i really don't take folks who openly disdain having standards seriously, because they often come from groups that are or are okay with transphobia, antiblackness, deep islamaphobia or other fascist beliefs

are we painting in broad strokes here or simply being reductive? what is this trying to accomplish?

Those “purity tests” were about the mod team covering for pedophile ex mod and the admin sexually harassing a woman in the shower.

I guess that when people talk about purity tests they mean “bitch and moan about stuff that doesn’t matter in the long run. Like displaying rainbow flags on embassies over other budget priorities.

As I asked in my original post, how do I start coalition building with people who fundamentally do not even recognize my oppression for what I believe it is? It makes no sense to me. Like, I'm certainly not going to ever say that "okay guys, we can keep the capitalism" for the sake of trying to get capitalists on my side when "the capitalism" is literally the core reason for why Black people are fucked. Because even if I do that and get the votes today, well tomorrow the contradiction remains and we're still gonna be fighting about this.

Now, I'm not saying I know everything. I can admit maybe I'm wrong on this belief. But for me to compromise on that belief, you would have to objectively demonstrate that capitalism had absolutely nothing to do with the slave trade or the continued economic disenfranchisement of Africa and Black diasporas happening literally right now, to say nothing of how it exacerbates social issues like lack of access to quality amenities, redlining, food deserts, etc.. And unfortunately I don't think the evidence really squares with you on that.
