Nep’s now writing essays about bad apple ads. 

No one is seriously offended by the ad.

We're now offended that people are insisting that the only reasonable reading is the literal one.

People keep talking about intent, seemingly unaware that the thread has already acknowledged the intent. The discussion should then be about how the visuals come across, and how different interpretations can be borne from different life and cultural perspectives. People have explained with unnecessary patience why they didn't like the ad.

Instead of simply going "oh, I get it now" or "I still don't see it the way you saw it," the response had largely been "anyone who took a negative reading (largely artists) is unreasonably offended and virtue signalling." The fact that the ad really didn't play well in Japan has largely gone untouched; I dunno, maybe no one wants to call the makers of our precious anime and video games shrill and irrational.

And that's another thing too. The chud-lite dog whistles have been off the charts. "Outrage." "Virtue signalling." "Rational." Yeah sure, Jan; sure you aren't stepping in it right now?

The people who like the ad don't have the high ground to claim personal offense now.

I mean, you can't avoid offending everyone. This isn't about sterilising comedy. Lots of jokes on lots of subjects without slurs can offend someone.

A white comedian saying the n-word though, for example, I can't understand how anyone would that that is okay in any context. Like, there's no need for it at all. Same with the other words I mentioned above. Removing those words doesn't rob a comedian of any tools, you can articulate your way around them easily and still make whatever joke you wanted to.

I have never seen it successful. ha Just something that happens at open mics especially if you do an honest sign up and go up list. Lots of random people given a microphone.

I just dislike the act of removing a word. I agree though removing those words shouldn't make a joke or a bit not work. It is the same thing when someone tells me they have no clean material.

I host a Sunday afternoon mic at a brewery, lots of families with kids so it is a clean show. When I hear someone say they have no clean material or that they can't write clean material I just think that they only find comedy in being shocking.
