Again, thinking this is just likes is missing the entire point.

Think about it this way: we've had threads on NYC's congestion pricing plan, right? There's pros and cons to it. It'll help cut down on greenhouse gasses and hopefully fund an expansion of mass transit. On the con side you're potentially doubling the commutes of people and costing them a lot more money. In total, it's a positive thing but we can admit there's issues with it.

When we had the thread it turned into people essentially taking a binary stance and refusing to admit the other side had a point. As a result they spoke past each other for pages and pages and got pissed off at each other for not listening. It's the sort of learned behavior we bring over from the rest of social media, where inflammatory remarks and binary stances are probably the easiest way to get likes and retweets. You can see it all the time in threads and, really, there's no way to ban our way out of that situation. However, if we can potentially "highlight" posts that do acknowledge the other side having a point and arguing in a less binary way then perhaps it leads to more people discussing issues and topics in a healthier way and lead to better discussions across the forum.

Essentially, we can't warn/ban our way to people having more nuanced and empathetic discussions but maybe we can promote that sort of discussion another way. The point of this isn't to highlight posts we like, but to highlight posts that reflect nuance or show empathy or try and bring some joy to the site.

I don't see how a highlight on, for example, this post could be seen as anything other than a "mod like".

I love the idea. It's a nice way to highlight positivity without having to lean on something like an upvote or a thumbs up system. And I'm sure it's great for the staff too because as you said, your main way of actioning posts is a stick, and it'll be nice to approach posts from the opposite angle instead. I can see that being therapeutic in a way.

Reading between the lines here with this, the RSS feed and the tournament features: MOBA wants them to drive up engagement BIG TIME. And resetera is struggling because of how toxic the sites gotten. Maybe there is threat to bring in new management… so b dumbs is flinging shit at the walls.

Man, this feels like such a far cry from how the forum started. I don't think just mods being able to highlight stuff using "internal guidelines" is going to do much for this. Even if the posts actually highlighted are generally good posts, the moment people disagree with that post being highlighted, it's going to cast the mods as biased and trying to push whatever their agenda is.

There is a feeling of "joy", but in a way that digs you under, and only grants more misery that looks more and more like joy the deeper you go.

I almost fell into the gamergate hole pre-transition when I was younger, stupider, naive, sheltered under a conservative household and environment, and was feeling lost and alone straight out of high-school with absolutely zero guidance that would actually help me, with my only solace being gaming and online gaming spaces. It only made me feel worse and I didn't realize it until I got out after making friends in progressive gaming spaces with progressives and minorities. Thankfully, I didn't go that far in, but the effects were already deep and it took me getting to know the people I was supposed to hate, and realizing they were the better people and that their beliefs and ideals made much more sense, for them to pull me out of the spiral and heal from it.

People in those right-wing spirals may think they feel joy and have found community, but their hate is poison to themselves and everyone around them. Joanne is absolutely 100% miserable while convincing herself she's not, or else she wouldn't focus so much on hatred and never doing anything fulfilling with her life since going down the transphobia spiral.

Their ideological framework always requires extensive regulation and centralization of power to maintain the ideology.  It's baked in.  You will never, ever have a community of these people in any form without it devolving into a central power suppressing dissent to maintain and perpetuate the ideological purity and goals.  It doesn't matter if it's a government, or a business venture, or an internet forum.  Fascists never want you to be free - they want you enslaved so you are in a compromised position and are forced to do their bidding - going as far as calling other people fascists if you dare dissent.  And they'll call on and employ cops everywhere to do it the second they can, after they tell you they're all bad. Those first two posts read like bots. They all have the same phrases and manner of speaking. It’s bizarre. There’s an agony to staying within the gaming sphere when any personal interests or feelings have faded. Stuck repeating the same handful of phrases with pre packaged aggregated views. Maybe that’s the hobby for them now. Finding where to insert the “oof” while ball washing corporations.

Anyway, sign of the times when the controversy with the French one was no playable ladies in multiplayer. Follow up had a guy and lady playable, and they complained it wasn’t just the lady. That trend followed for the next couple. Think they had stats that most played as the dude in the Greek game but they made the lady the canon choice. All that to say, would anybody complain if the Japanese lady was the only playable character here?
