Coming into the thread to lecture people that they've done something wrong because they ignored the "true victim" is frankly absurd for a forum that almost never shows any kind of empathy. Now an entire narrative has spun up that posts were "devaluing Black people's humanity" or ignoring Black people's pain or saying Black people need to take it because some posters were thinking about the embarrassment the student felt instead of the principal, an entirely valid empathetic choice.

I want to touch on something that I've experienced a lot in real life, and that I'm also seeing in this thread. It goes along with the brilliant post Nepenthe made and that others have touched on about how people are systemically trained to overlook Black pain. Sometimes a worse thing happens, and people won't realize that racist aggression even translates into Black pain.

In essence, a lot of people think Black folks enjoy getting into racist confrontations and being the recipient of racist aggression. Like it's a good look for us. A lot of people really do believe that Black folks are going Aha! You've activated my trap card! whenever some racist decides to shit on our day. And like, yeah, Black folks make those jokes (and they're funny). But Black folks make those jokes because we know they're jokes; because we tend to not have an issue seeing our own humanity.

In reality, being the recipient of anti-Black racism is not a good look. It doesn't put us in a power position. We don't even have the guarantee that we'll be protected when it happens (just look at this thread!). Having to defend ourselves from racist aggression is incredibly embarrassing; it's incredibly mortifying. You're often terrified because your safety isn't guaranteed, and so you have to project a sense of strength or indifference that you often do not feel in that moment. Whenever it's happened to me, I feel like I have an explosion of emotions and fears go off in my brain and I have maybe two seconds to get my shit together and project something that won't make me feel compromised or make them feel emboldened. It's awful, and not only that but studies have indicated that it could be adding years to our lives:

African Americans who reported more experiences with racial discrimination are likely to age faster, adding to evidence that racism is not only a "social and moral dilemma" but also a "public health issue," according to an Auburn University study published last month.

And so it can be frustrating when you're on the receiving end of racist aggression and people don't treat you like you're hurt, but instead like a spotlight has been put on you.
