They're both very interesting. In both games you need the levels and materia levels to be even be competitve in both games. But, the games deep battle system doesn't really get started until you play them.

The battle director Teruki Endo, who joined for Rebirth is really flexing his muscle here. He came from Capcom and was the battle director for a little game called Monster Hunter World. He also worked on MH3 and 4.

It's almost as though the regular mode is a tutorial and Hard Mode is the real game. I'm currently going through it and even at max level and max materia, it's a really fun challenge. I remember the same with Remake, but Rebirth's tweaking of the battle engine makes it shine. Aerith got some nice buffs and Cait Sith is incredible once you figure out the stuffed Moogle mechanics.

The game also goes pretty fast once you start skipping cutscenes, unless you want to watch them on a second playthrough. I did not.

I'm excited for the Brutal and Legendary challenges after beating the Hard Mode campaign.

It's nice getting a Hard Mode that really makes you delve deep into the game mechanics.

No, I'm dismissing your "gotcha" about women reporting women as witches to be convicted and subsequently killed because it does nothing to counter the fact that three of four people convicted and killed were women? What nonsense are you even talking about here? Why should I care about any of these games? What specific examples are you referring to? You haven't given a single bit of actual insight into any of the games and about how they are similar to Witchfire or it's story setting.

I don't know anything about the Witcher 3 and I'm not even sure what religious organizations exist in the franchise. I don't know what the world is called, or if they are using real world historical terms to jusify whatever Geralt and co is doing.

And no, FF doesn't actually have many specific "witches", and the only two I can think of with any prominence are the wise Matoya in I, and Aricela who joins your party in XI's Seekers of Adoulin expansion. Even "black magic" practicioners aren't considered inherently evil, you usually have at least a few in your party.

Are the main characters in any of these games you listed also Pope-backed, conquistador adjacent hunters?

I'm looking at this Dev's actual history in addtion to their (imo) poor setting choice and being suspcious about it as a result. Because it's fcking sus. If you still like it in spite of what the devs may or may not be doing, that's your choice. Again, I don't have anything to say about how well the game plays. That's never been my concern.

As for witch portrayal in games in the past including FF I thought about Ultimecia in FF8 or the witches in The Witcher or even fucking Bayoneta or Banjo Kazooie! Hell! Persecution of witches was more realistically/historically portrayed in Dragon Age than in this game!
I do like the game, despite stupid comments from the one person in the team years ago. Because there are other people in that team, that are trying to make a good game, and are so far doing it!
