Why? It hasn't been updated in well over a year, and of the three rules on there, one (Bugs Bunny Florida GIF) is hilariously small-potatoes, while another (the so-called AI thread "moratorium") seems to be ignored for negatively-framed threads on a damn near daily basis (example from earlier today). I have lost count of the number of AI outrage-bait posts I have reported for blatantly violating this "policy", while quoting the policy in the report, only to be completely ignored, even as the thread agitates people into saying inflammatory shit like "fuck everyone who uses this," which was exactly the sort of bile the policy was supposed to discourage.

Every single report you send in is "No AI threads outside of the OT," which isn't actually the rule. The rule is that we will lock threads if they're nothing more than showcases of AI-generated content, ex, "Look at this song I made of Queen singing the Family Guy theme" or whatever. Other threads such as news updates within the AI or arts industries we will allow on a case-by-case basis.

We also weren't trying to crack down on negative opinions towards AI. We were instead trying to crack down on the dismissive techbro bullshit and just outright clueless nonsense being aimed at actual professional artists. This is a video game forum; celebrating a technology that is ultimately meant to replace developers while sneering at them as being as outdated as the coal miners was bullshit that needed to end.

The AI-OT and prohibition on showcase threads were a middle ground to acknowledge the fact that "the genie was out of the bottle." It was never meant to make the entire forum a safe space for LLM users and AI-content proponents. Reddit and Twitter are relative havens for that.

I will own up to the fact that some threads have probably slipped by that should have been closed. But your report crusade has fallen on deaf ears largely because you've misread the rule in the first place, in part because I understand that you're also upset a thread of yours was closed. That's something I would need to look back into to see if an error was made.

Nepenthe, your original policy does not say that it *only* applies to such "showcases". The staff communication says "AI content news that is merely about individual showcases of AI application, algorithm updates, offsite community bans, and otherwise non-pressing news are not to be made as their own threads", which includes the kind of "look at this neat thing" you mention but covers much more than that -- such as the quite broad "any news that isn't pressing." And there have been multiple threads even under this specific callout that have been allowed. Here's Procreate banning use of AI. Here's a fearmongering editorial that literally ends with "we are fucked". Here's an article about Google pulling a random TV ad. Literally do a title search for "AI" and there are *dozens* of other examples of non-majorly-newsworthy topics relating to AI content that should clearly fall under the policy as written but remained open so the same people can post the same cynical browbeating circlejerk comments.

It's also not a great look to be saying "we need to ban 'showcase' threads to protect the feelings of artists" (which is fair!) but then letting these negative threads run wild even as they fill with hyperbolic insults and attacks on people who genuinely enjoy and use it, even non-commercially. It's of a piece with the general toxic unwillingness to distinguish hatred of the socioeconomic abuse of the technology by corporations (which is ultimately a problem with capitalism) from use by regular people for purely creative pursuits or to make their lives a little easier, something which is already commonplace and will only become moreso over time. It turns what should be a nuanced, complex intersection of philosophy and technology and the nature of creativity into yet another hardline black-and-white us-vs-them culture war. We can do better than that.


Not "a thread", but multiple, high-effort informational OTs created according to the terms of the policy, which were only created after getting explicit permission beforehand. Every attempt I've made to discuss even objectively "major news" by the rules you laid out has been pre-emptively or retroactively denied (and explicitly for not being framed negatively enough), which makes seeing all these lazy inflammatory non-news threads on a daily basis so galling. It's irritating to spend so much effort in good faith trying to have a substantive discussion about the biggest breakthroughs shut down over and over, while seeing multiple ragebait threads that are sometimes literally just an embedded tweet go on for pages and pages of bile, day in and day out.

I understand there are negatives and downsides to AI. I don't want to silence that discussion! It's an important aspect to talk about. But this consistent allowing of negative, doomy threads while blocking positive or even just neutrally-framed topics is making that discussion worse, not better. It's stoking fear, anger, and disgust while leaving people ignorant of how any of it actually works or any bright spots or helpful aspects they could benefit from. There's value in sharing genuinely useful stuff like NotebookLM, or wild creative shit like the "infinite web simulator" project, or a thoughtful piece on how the music industry has contended with disruptive technological advances throughout history -- so much more to think about than endless retreads of "company X did a shitty thing with AI". Those are all worthwhile discussions I've been able to have on Tildes, on MetaFilter, even on Lemmy... but not here, and that's sad.

I'd be happy to, if the existing policy were either consistently enforced as written or updated with a more accurate description of how it's used in practice. As-is, reading this forum is a near-daily reminder that one of the most compelling and challenging topics for discussion in modern times is being distorted and poisoned by inconsistent enforcement of a rule that was supposed to bring the temperature down but is currently doing the opposite, by putting a very heavy thumb on the scale towards "fuck this and everyone who takes any interest in it" (which includes me).

I've worked with a number of Central and South American refugees, whose parents crossed the border to get their kids away from the violence of their homes and to try and provide a better life for them. All I could think about was Trump wanting to go around, door-to-door as he put it, and deport all of them to a home that would see them dead inside of a month of returning. I thought about what responsibility I have toward them and I got too heated and it was wrong.

I thought about the trans kid I still mentor, how he wants to start his hormones in the spring, after he no longer needs parental permission, how he's finally going to be able to live his life the way he wants and gets to be the man he has always been, and how Trump would take that away from him, dooming him to living in the body of someone he isn't, with the stroke of a pen. I wondered what responsibility I have to him and I got heated and I shouldn't have used the language that I did. It was wrong and I do apologize.

When I saw those posts, I thought about myself and the people like me who have chronic, preexisting conditions that would result in insurance companies denying us coverage if not for the ACA and how Trump was a single vote in the senate from repealing it. How my own medication costs $60,000 a year, with all the potential cancerous side effects, and how there's people far worse off than I am. I wondered about what I owed them and it got me seeing red and I reacted in the wrong way. There's no room for that sort of language or tone, especially from someone in my position.

I thought about these cousins from Eastern Europe I have never met but have talked to on the phone and how afraid they are of what is going on over there. About how the stories of mass graves and mass executions and kidnapped children and reports of sterilization and what sort of thing would happen to them if we stopped trying to help and left them to their fate. I got way too angry and there's no excuse for the sort of language I used.

The truth is that I've been struggling with the whole voting thing this cycle more than I ever have because of what I've seen in Gaza and my responsibility to the people who live there and my responsibilities I have to the people in the US and in other parts of the world. The truth is that it isn't an easy situation for anyone to navigate, there's no simple answers, no obviously correct choices to be had. This is why we have been asking everyone not to attack each other over whether or not they choose to vote. Criticize the stances on the issues that these candidates have, we'd never say not to do that, but in an election where so much is at stake there's no room for attacking each other and making insinuations and I forgot that and myself for a moment. I shouldn't have done that and I apologize profusely for it. To both Nepenthe and all of you. Everyone deserves better and I intend to make sure that happens.
