It’s difficult to detach Veilguard from its history, too. It’s not the Dragon Age I remember, where random sidequests challenged you with moral dilemmas, demons tempted you with power, characters were covered in blood in every cutscene (yes, blood spatter is gone), and the world was filled with horrors. Veilguard fully commits to the jump from dark heroic fantasy to straight-up heroic fantasy. If Dragon Age: Origins was the 1998 movie Blade, this is Guardians of the Galaxy.

 

A lot of the dialogue in Veilguard has that same, sarcastic, quippy tone of the Marvel movies. It’s like someone crunching an ice pop in your ear. There are rare moments where excellent writing reaches through the screen and makes you consider your mortality, but it’s inconsistent. Compelling conversations about religion, history, and the interpretations of both are juxtaposed against voice lines where people say things like “watch out, these guys GO HARD”, “were they… doing it?”, or “taking the p*ss”. It pulls you right out of the fantasy setting. These characters definitely know what TikTok is.

I feel like all of this is solved if we all just collectively agree that when we use pronouns we're referencing sex and not gender, pronouns are not now and never were a matter of what you want to be called, that's what names and nicknames are for

"oh it's the tall black dude," you would never say that's a white dude just because he prefers to be known as that, you're talking about something innate to that person, as innate as sex

fwiw the more interesting or damning part is the tone and story is reportedly lighthearted do better-isms with generic stock characters and unconvincing banter. Whether you want to call it influenced by Ted Lasso or those dungeons and dragon podcasts deals. Like, it's meant to be escapism. Which is fine. That's fine. Our uncanny character models are chuckling at this quirky skeleton sidekick, who--get this--wears freakin' gems in his eyes like sunglasses. Oh my days.

Yeah, that's my biggest turn off so far. I'm getting pretty sick of this overly over the top "wholesomeness" a bunch of AAA games have started to strive for where the dynamic is more like a saturday morning cartoon than an HBO prime time show. Concord(RIP) was maybe the absolute poster child of this.
And while I don't want to blame everything on "woke" I wonder if it plays a bit of a role, especially considering how D&D is now all about never declaring any race or culture as evil. From what I remember the Qun in Dragon Age 1 and 2 are like a hardcore warrior race with super strict honor codes and no regard for anything weak but this seems to have been progressively sanded down to them actually not being that bad with each new entry so that we can respect them as just an alternate form of belief.

I do, I think it's very clearly tied to the ideological presentation. Look at how many of these people think depicting something is endorsing it. Look at how they struggle with any character who cannot be delineated into perfectly moral hero and absolutely corrupt villain. They're prioritizing the "safety" of the audience because you're supposed to the interpret the audience, especially if they're a racial or sexual minority, as children. Children who are all the same in personality and incredibly fragile. Look at how they think "chuds" react to anything slightly out of place, they know their audience is that way. They have basically have no agency, so it's on you, the storyteller who knows better to guide them away from the dangers. Don't ask questions, just consume wholesome product and get ready for next wholesome product.

It's getting to the point where I don't really fully trust reviewers when they are doing games that are diverse (I.e PoC, LGBTQ or women that aren't there to look sexy for men) because sure, this one has shown their arse but how many have abhorrent views and reviewing these games lower but knowing to hide it and not make it obvious they are being racist/sexist/transphobic/homophobic in their reviews?

The German gendering they use is somewhat weird. From one review (Gamestar) I've seen, they seem to use "hen" as a pronoun, which is apparently listed as a non binary pronoun on some websites but never gained any traction at all in wider society. It's telling that even the reviewer seemed to think they made it up for the game and just didn't explain it well.

The ironic thing is that I do use they/them pronouns for certain folk mostly because I've been subconsciously conditioned to (social media, politically correct workplace stuff, etc.), but I never really take it too seriously. Obviously I would never play offense or defense for it because I genuinely feel the whole non-binary thing is pretty stupid and confusing at the end of the day.

The problem with this is that the overwhelming majority of transgender individuals harshly reject the idea that they should ever be identified by their biological sex unless it is absolutely necessary for their health. The last thing the (average) transgender woman wants to be is to be called a man, male, he, him, etc. when they have come out as a woman.
