I firmly believe much of the dismissal of the series is due to the fact that many people dismiss it due to it having a female lead, and it seems to be a popular target for the alt right chuds.

I don't approve of cutting an episode because of this but at the same time this also feels like the pendulum simply swinging back. When episodes from old TV shows like Community were removed for supposed racism these same people were completely fine with it.

I didn't really know what to say in response to it. It didn't seem like a big deal to me, but this kid drew attention to it and made fun of me for it. That sticks in my head to this day, because it was the first time someone brought it up outside of my older siblings who I didn't always take seriously.

Another time was in 2014, when I was playing Smash Bros for Wii U. I was 21 at this point, playing it at my brother's. His wife (a woman in her late 20s, fyi) entered the living room and saw me playing as Peach. She then asks that familiar question of "why are you playing as a girl?". I paused the game and turned around, saying I liked Peach's playstyle and how it appealed to me. She just shook her head and laughed dismissively in response. This was a grown ass adult remarking on it now. I couldn't get my head around why someone thought that was such an issue.

Now, for context, I am gay. Maybe Peach's pink frills and feminine style appealed to my suppressed sexuality when I was growing up. But even if it did, I don't think that should be an 'acceptable explanation' for why I like to play as her. After all, why can't straight guys play as girls? Or girls play as guys? Or whoever someone wants to be? I've had similar instances in other games, being questioned on playing characters like Chun-Li in Street Fighter or Ivy in Soul Calibur, who aren't even as 'girly' as Peach in my eyes. Have you ever encountered situations like this when gaming, ERA? How did you handle it if so? Did you shrug it off? Did you challenge it? I'm curious to hear others' experiences.
