One minor point of the video when Shaun is discussing Baldur's Gate 3 and the IGN France video because he brings up two points that I don't really like as justifications for sexualization and objectification in gaming; that "Progressives like horny too!" and "There's an in-game justification for it!"

The former I find exceptionally annoying because it kind of misses the actual issue many women have which isn't that we don't like sexy, it's that the definition of sexy in our culture is too narrow and the idea that everything has to be "sexy" blocks many women from appearing in games or at least much harder to appear; from fatter women, taller women, muscly women, older women etc. Even in-games that get praised for being progressive, these types of women tend to still be absent or less common then their male counterparts and I feel the justification, of "Progressives are horny too!" gets used to justify that, too justify barring women who are deemed "too ugly" from appearing. It was rather shocking a while back seeing how many ERA users flat out said they didn't want ugly people appearing in games, that people who don't meet society's beauty standards break their immersion etc. It makes it clear women like myself don't have a place in gaming, we're not wanted and I feel Shaun in that bit falls into a trap I see a lot of men fall into when discussing this topic; assuming only chud men and rightwingers have these issues with women which isn't true and I've found a lot of "leftist" men can have these issues as well and are also unwilling to acknowledge this and can be so easily swayed by the right person.

Which goes into the second thing, the whole "It's okay as long as their is an in-universe explanation" aka the "Breathe through their skin" defence which no. Just no. You can pull any explanation out of your arse to justify designing a women the way you did; that doesn't make the design any less objectifying or sexualized because that's not an explanation, it's a justification and let's be honest, 95% of the time we know damn well what the actual explanation is. What really rubbed me the wrong way with Shaun's defences here was he was saying the same shit I've seen "allies" use to shut up and shame women who have issues with sexualization in gaming! "Their an in-game explanation!", "But other women like it!", "It's just a preview YOU MUST give the game a chance!" (which no, if the preview fails to probably appeal, that's the fault of the makers of the preview, not the women who have often been burned too many times); along with all the smug men tell us that we're "Over sensitive", "Kill joys", "Prudes" etc, making it clear that's it's a boy club and we're not invited. I really fucking hate that argument and so often, it's so clear their saying it to justify liking a game from their favourite Director or Producer, to downplay their issues with women that people like Kojima have demonstrated of they decades. You see the same shit from men Shonen fans as well when they shame and tell off women for not liking overly sexualized costumes there as well.

I was reading this piece on the flow state, that state where you can just do a task at your highest level almost by instinct, and it turns out that the state is achieved by your skill equaling the challenge of the task and being able to see your completion state.

I mention it because it kinda relates to what you're saying. Evolving Eevee to Espeon isn't hard and you know know how to do it, there's a clear success state, but it takes effort and as a result feels really good when you pull it off. Ideally, that's the sort of thing you want in a game: a struggle with a clear success state that is within the player's abilities.

nothing in pokemon ever requires "flow state" because it's a turn based game without precision mechanics

apparently in most games evolving eevee to espeon requires "friendship" which usually means walking around with them set as your buddy for a very long time, so the only "zen flow state" involved is running in circles doing nothing for hours

it would feel as good as evolving any pokemon for any reason, minor dopamine rush at getting new more powerful thing, there is basically nothing special about it at all
