I don't think boiling down relateability to shallowness is correct because, if you're actually just a remotely conscious human being and trying to build and maintain relationships, emotions and experiences are actually complex things, and understanding this allows you some degree of empathy into experiences you haven't had. I'm a teetotaler but I can feel the sense of peer pressure, regret, and social alienation and baggage present in "Swimming Pools." It's because my own personal life is filled with these emotions too.

Of course, vapid pop shit about "love" and "parties" and shit is as well and good. I like vapid shit too. I will blast Becky G's "Singing in the Shower" with my chest out. But I'm also an adult and I need some level of mental stimulation in either production or wordplay after while. I'd kill myself if I had to listen to fucking "God's Plan" for a month straight.
