I note they reference "clients" so they were already a practicing lawyer before the lawsuit was decided so no, they did not have to sue to become a lawyer.

The stipulation says the Illinois ethics rule banning sex discrimination applies when a lawyer discriminates against a transgender individual on the basis of sex in violation of a law or ordinance, when that law or ordinance’s use of the word sex encompasses gender identity or expression

I don't know what this means but it feels like it's the same as Biden's Title IX changes on Day 1 of his Presidency.

"du jour" is French for "of the day" as in the soup of the day

"de jure" means "in law" as in things stated in law or legal precedent

one would think a lawyer would know such things

also, the declaration they sought would not seem to overturn some ruling that trans people cannot be lawyers, but instead is an active statement that they cannot be discriminated against on the basis of gender identity, which are different things

so no, you didn't "have to sue the state of Illinois for the right to be a lawyer whilst trans," because you already had that right, because you were already a lawyer

you sued for additional protections which were not in place

from an article about coney barrett's comments:

Justice Amy Coney Barrett earlier had asked if there were examples of “de jure,” or by law, discrimination against transgender people rather than private discrimination.

Strangio cited laws against cross-dressing and previous bans on military service by transgender people.

so, those examples would be active laws that say "trans people cannot do this thing"

there was no law that said "trans people cannot be lawyers," therefore there is no de jure discrimination against trans lawyers

if you suffered specific indignities like genital inspections, one would assume such things weren't rooted in law but instead in local rules or judicial orders/decisions in specific cases
