Putin and Xi are not using laws prohibiting hate speech against minorities to persecute dissidents. Also Russia and China are not dictatorships that imprison, dissappear and murder political dissidents because of such laws. Those countries are in no shape or form examples of hate speech laws against minorities leading to bad things.

The world would be a much better place if the continued persistence of hate that has contributed to millions upon millions of unnecessary deaths is granted a fitting end with the appropriate punishments.

Hate speech is not free speech, it is a tool of the privileged to oppress and keep down the people they consider below them, that should be blatantly obvious if you ever take a quick look at the rhetoric of Nazi scum like Trump (edit: I wrote a lot of this days ago but didn't post, fitting Trump proved exactly my point in the meantime) go on and on about "Free Speech" because they see Hate speech as a tool of power and control; a tool to keep down minorities and women; it's why they hate the Civil Rights Movement and other movements and attempts by minorities to make things more equal. It's not the only tool of course, their is a reason why Nazis and right wingers want to destroy and control the education system (since a well educated populace is well less receptive to their BS).

Which is why it frustrates me so many progressives and liberals in the UK and US insist that hate speech is free speech, that we SHOULD defend people's right to be racist, sexist, post hateful and bigot things etc because "It would be just as bad" as oppressing minorities which is just insane. I see from YouTubers like Legal Eagle, I've seen from Liberals and Progressive in real life and online and it's so annoying because their working on a very flawed premise; that our society is a equal one, that our democracy was built on the idea of equal rights for all... Which is isn't and wasn't and it's depressing to fully realize that's built in from a foundational level.

I feel that the simplest case that free speech is not some grand protection against tyranny is how America's free speech laws haven't stopped the likes of Fox News, Joe Rogan, Alex Jones and what have you from causing the country's own descent into fascism, but in fact protected them as they did so.

To me, my reaction to hate speech is the same as it'd be if someone proudly proclaimed to be a pedophile. If were not going to tolerate that, we shouldn't be tolerating the vitriol against folks just trying to live and love a little bit different than you.

The thing is that people here seem scared of said safeguards being turned against themselves by an authoritarian government.
But the issue is that this hypothetically can be attributed to anything. It's the "Hate Speech Laws? But what if the Government™ gets to dictate what Hate means?" slippery slope fallacy. Even though Hate Speech Laws are a good thing, I don't expect the US to understand what would be necessary to enact such laws. Just goes to show how American institutions are a failure that the citizens no longer trust basic safeguards.

But, freedom of speech, without criminalization of hate speech in tandem, is not an entirely good thing.

This makes me immediately think it shouldn't exist in its current form because the first amendment and the american idea of freedom of speech are both pretty bad. Americans are allowed to say the most vile things without consequences in the name of "freedom of speech" and through the internet they flood the world with this BS.

It's not a bad idea and it works for the majority of the world, america is the odd one out not the other way around and that you think america has it all figured out is kind of ridiculous when america is one of the most fucked up countries at the moment partly because people are allowed to spread lies and hateful content all day long.

The american idea of freedom of speech is toxic and the direct cause of a lot of harm.

The way forward I think is to get this classified as hate speech, which I'm surprised but not shocked that it isn't already.

If we're talking about a reworking of the Constitution the first amendment is absolutely part of that. I agree it shouldn't be abolished completely but it also shouldn't apply to corporations via Citizens United or have blanket protections for hate speech or lying from politicians and those issues are inherent in absolute protections as interpreted by SCOTUS.
We have examples of other countries doing just fine without blanket free speech protections, and ignoring those countries is absolutely US centric.
