unironically, if you could verify age with google once and then use anonymous oauth as verification the vast majority of issues people have with online age verification would be eliminated (from content producers, hosts, and consumers)

This is the correct framing, and it's also why the conservative thought is so powerful. The way we've done Youth athletics by first making it boys only, then splitting women off into their own category, is intuitive for people to understand in a gender essentialist type of way. But it's not about fairness, which is why conservatives generally don't include professional sports in their complaints, and generally target trans women. Nor is it about safety, given the amount of data we have with injury rates.

Because if you wanted actual "fairness" in youth and amateur sports, you'd completely tear down the binary framework, and make leagues skill and experience based within age brackets. Because anybody who's been to any youth game, most are lopsided blowouts because the skill and experience delta is only more pronounced, as you said.
