I'm a Canadian, and I hate how much time I spend lately wondering if I'll get killed in some bullshit US invasion. I 100% understand that all of this garbage is threatening decent Americans as well, but part of what makes this so frustrating is that in Canada it feels like none of us have any agency in this. We're waking up to daily threats from a country that we have no power over, and when we express our fears about it, we often get shouted down.

I truly believe it's some kind of survival/coping thing for a lot of people. When you realise on some level that the odds are stacked against you just because of your immutable characteristics, but you don't really want to accept that on a more conscious level, it's not unusual to distance yourself from that. Maybe you even agree that women (or any other minority group) are "inferior", but you're "special", you're one of "the good ones", and surely that means even people that hate women will accept you, right?

Of course not. Any "alliance" is circumstantial, and they will be the first to be thrown under the bus when it's convenient. But trying to appease people that threaten them may feel like the "safer" alternative than to distancing from them and having to accept the unfortunate reality that there's a lot of bigots in this world, and many can and do have the power to make life worse for you just because of who you are.
