I don't really understand this expectation that a company should allow their employees to protest their actions. They talk all day about capitalist hell scapes but then get upset when it turns out the company is mostly interested in what work the employees can provide, not their political opinions. It's one of those aspect of media that I always feel is very unfair, that comedy writers often get less respected, less accolades or treated less seriously as writers because of their genre of choice; same with comedy actors who feel the need to perform in serious films to be considered a real/serious/good actors in the eyes of their peers/press/audiences. That being in a comedy is lesser to being in drama.

And to me, in some ways that should be the other way round because comedy is WAY harder to write then drama. This was something I really began to appreciate when I was in University doing a Film and TV BA and MA (and reappreciating again writing my novel), something funny in your head can fall flat when typed out on a script, or is funny on script but then fails when acted out for one reason or another. Comedy is far more subjective then tragedy in my experience, it's way easier to make a crowd cry then it is to make them all laugh. Comedy writers deserve more respect.

That is not to say writing drama is easy either, you can easily fall into a trap of being over dramatic or it falls into being unintentionally funny territory; just in my mind, comedy is much harder to pull off well, especially to a wide audience because I feel their are so many more factors that can make a joke fail; including the fact that a lot of comedy can become easily dated due to references becoming forgotten to new audiences, sarcasm missed, overuse of a joke (either by the work or the fandom) or people forgetting a work was intended to be a joke in the first place for very old works.

The ex wanted to sell their house in the divorce, Nothing Loud demanded he be allowed to keep it so they said "fine." That and the student loan debts are entirely on him.

Which reminds me, here's Nothing Loud just two years before the divorce:

I live in Seattle and will finish my PhD soon (in less than 2 years). I'm a computational biologist/biostatistician/bioengineer so my career is in demand (biotech). Im a complex health case and I have a great healthcare support system here in the US and I pay almost nothing for it, including couples counseling monthly and individual psychotherapy 2x per week with a trauma psychologist, and monthly meetings with a personal addiction psychiatrist. I take lots of psych meds, I'm a congenital heart disorder patient, I have IBS and Im a dermatology patient. How easy is it to set up this kind of care in Canada?

I have a trauma PhD clinical psychologist trained in IFS, DBT, EMDR and CBT that I see 2x a week plus an addiction research MD psychiatrist monthly and I pay $0 for it. Doubt I can get that kind of care in Canada likely ever, the healthcare in Canada seems kinda shite compared to my insurance and my options here in the US ironically (yeah it's "free" in the sense that you won't go bankrupt if you have an emergency but the wait times to see a specialist or a PCP starting out if you don't have a life-threatening emergency seem pretty poor, and it sounds like you don't have freedom of selection of specialists you want, and it seems like highly specialized specialists are not very easy to see (I need aortic graft cardiothoracic surgeons and congenital cardiologists monitoring me, easy to get in the US))

But everywhere I read said that it takes like 1-2 years to get a mental healthcare therapist and like a year to get a PCP in BC. That sounds frankly unacceptable and not "objectively better" to me, despite Canada's intentions with socialized medicine. I get that I have an immensely privileged situation but to say it's objectively better in Canada when it is a well-known problem how hard it is to just get a basic PCP sounds like an odd assertion. Here in Washington state any poor or unemployed person can qualify for Apple Healthcare (the state Medicaid program) and the University of Washington medical system will take you and you won't have to pay anything, and you can get a PCP within a week just by calling the UW scheduling number.

- all the same scientific theory they teach MDs in medicine except we trade learning to treat live patients and react in a hospital with politics for learning how to create knowledge and real science
- need to move internationally? That's cool, I don't have to worry about medical licensing boards
- no residency required (a postdoc would be nice but I'm done making chump change and I'm about to graduate with 3-5 publications so it's not necessary)
- the general public may not respect you or understand what you do, but MDs ironically respect your knowledge a lot.
