misery mired, post: 148348447, member: 112300 wrote:"so, my manly myles... you want something sweet?" she ran her nails down his trembling chest as she leaned in close, her breath hot on his tinnitus-filled ear. "... or do you want something stinky?"

myles coughed violently as his coworker-turned-lover dropped a pungent pad from the sweaty crevices of her federation armor onto his head. he tried to chuckle through the fit of hacking, but the attempt made him sound like a braying donkey in the death throes of a gangrenous infection. aw shucks, myles thought bashfully. she won't find this attractive at all

as if she were so sensitive to his needs that her mind knew his very thoughts, sam wiped a splotch of his phlegm from her cheek as she reassured him

"oh myles," she said in a voice laden with love. "you're the most attractive man i've ever met." her eyes drifted off, watching some unseen playback of a fantasy that made her face come alive. "you're the one samus chose to save, remember? and any man good enough for her is more than good enough for me." sam's mouth curved up into a nervous smile

oh, barnacles, myles thought. there she goes again talking about that crazy bounty hunter. you know, sometimes i think she only wants to be my wife because samus found my life worthwhile enough to save. i just wish i could find out if she likes me for me

"hey big fella... don't get lost in thought down there." sam rubbed her finger against his glasses to remove the fog, inadvertently smearing oily skin discharge across the lens instead. "your heroine is right here." she pointed to her neck, where a morph ball pendant hung from a string of silver. myles could never tell if she was referencing herself or samus aran when she gestured at that particular area, an occurence he bore witness too at least twelve times a day

"i've, uh... i've actually been meaning to talk to you about that, sweetheart." the anxiety welling up within myles was palpable. "i, uh... well... i don't think samus should be our officiant"

the room went silent as myles waited for a response. but none came. the only sound was the increasingly panicked breaths he took as he worked himself into an anxiety attack over what she'd eventually say whenever she next spoke

oh shucks, oh boy, oh no, he thought frantically. she's the only woman i've ever had a chance with, and now i've gone and ruined it. so what if she has a thing for samus? it's not like they're in the same league. it's no different really than my naughty dreams of sylux. of course i at least have the decency to not bring him up everytime we're trying to have "the big sweet stinky," but you know. opposites attract. she likes to bring her celebrity crush up every chance she gets, while i prefer to stuff mine down in the same deep chamber of shame that also houses the fact that phil always has been and always wll be a better employee than me. gosh myles, you should be on your hands in knees in supplication and thanks to sam every morning for so much as looking at me, let alone loving me. or at least, loving the parts of me samus made contact with

it was true. though sam was vocally adamant about her attraction to myles, she only touched the same parts of his body samus had:

his chest from when samus had shoved him to safety as he screamed for help over a floating energy orb he had mistaken for a flying geega; his glasses from when samus had knocked on his head with her heavy knuckles of power-suited steel in a silent, pantomimed attempt at asking "is anyone home in that vapid head of yours?"; his left foot from when samus had accidentally crushed several of his bones by stepping on top of it while he was sitting there trying to rest (it doesn't bother me that she didn't see me. sure i was crying loudly before it happened, but she probably thought the noise was just ambient planetary sounds. the crying afterwards though, she definitely noticed); and the rash of skin beneath the flap of his right butt cheek from when samus ricocheted into him during an errant morph ball bounce while he'd been changing his diaper from one of the many little whoopsies he made while trying to survive on viewros

for whatever reason, sam had no interest in making physical contact with him anywhere else. she'd only done so once, the one time myles asked her to prove she wanted to marry him by giving him a brief romantic smooch. after a long, tortured pause sam obliged, but she began wretching as soon as their lips brushed. thankfully most of her vomit missed his face, but he still heard her grumble in her sleep for the next few nights things like "i thought it would be sweet" or "stinky is as stinky does and sam don't love the stinky ones" or "i actually want to marry samus aran and i'm only settling for myles mckenzie because he has faint traces of her psychic residue on extremely specific parts of his body and that's as close as i'm realistically ever going to get to the real thing." his brain had compartimentalized that last one, making him think it was some inaccurattely remembered line from a half-forgotten dream

"uh... sweetie?" he said, trying to get her attention once more. but sam still wasn't responding. she just sat there, mouth agape in a dissociated stupor. after three straight days and nights without change, myles finally had to swallow his pride

he reached for his comm device and pulled up his emergency contact list. after a few button presses the line was ringing

he heard a click

"hello?" myles asked nervously

"..."

"samus, is that you?"

"... ..."

"i really need your help. it's sam. she—well, i think you better get over here"

"... ... ..."

myles didn't know how to respond, so he just waited for samus to say something

"... ... ... ..."

he waited and waited

"... ... ... ... ..."

"hello? are you still there?"

a voice whirred on the other end and began speaking in a stiff, robotic tone

"myles mckenzie. this is adam mal-mal-malkovich. samus would like to know. how you got this num-number."

"oh, uh... heh heh... well, y'see, there's this guy i work with named phil and..."

"let me stop you. right there." adam's voice was pure digitized monotony. "you are. under no circumstance. ever to contact samus again. she says if she does this one thing for you. that's it. no more favors. and she won't be doing. your wedding. if you call her over now."

myles' eyes lit up. this was his chance! he could snap his blushing bride-to-be out of her depersonalized bout of "pondering the consequences of having to spend the rest of my life with myles mckenzie"-based depression while also getting samus out of the picture for good

"yes," myles replied with a wicked grin. "i think that arrangement would be just fine. send her now!"

he clicked off his comm and waited for the object of sam's desire to arrive one final time, fantasizing about sylux all the while

Yes, text characters are often mistakes in GenAI image generators. They're getting better by the day, though.

(There's...a lot to discuss with AI. And we don't have the luxury of discussing it properly or authentically here in this thread right now, because one of the world leaders in charge that could help reign in this tool is an orange buffoon tyrant)

There indeed is huge utility to using GenAI to make daily tasks more efficient and accessible to everyone, including perhaps an innocent or supposed intern or whatever person that was tasked with making a holiday calendar. In fact, GenAI can often be a very useful scaffolding tool to innovate or define concepts or explore ideas in a zero-stakes space.

However, I also know that, as a PhD AI Scientist, my knowledge and my opinion are not welcome on this board because it is vociferously "anti-AI", which btw is as ignorant as saying "I'm anti-math" given that AI is a fucking sector of mathematics and computer science that is like 75 years old (of course, exponentially growing since 2000--2010+)

So I won't be saying much more here, as it is uninteresting at best if not repulsive to be associated with the AI discussion on the Gaming side of this board.

Boredfrom, as the usual Bire recipient of exaggerated attacks on your character, I am surprised to see you lob similar invectives against me--your sometimes ally!

I just know enough* to know that the AI shit in games--both explicitly and tangentially--is a done deal and here to say. There will be shit implementations of it, cut corners, job losses, etc. But it's not going to stop or go backwards. In part because people don't even care enough to define what "AI usage" in game even consists of. Placeholder art? Maybe ok...? AI voices? Not if voice actors don't get paid...wait, you paid them? Still no!

Then you get weird diminished versions of opposition that are only apply in cases where literal images are generated...and then it's like, what makes a .jpg so special and sacred above all other potentially AI generated things? AI generating extremely human looking NPCs and motion rigging obviously "cost jobs" too...but that didn't matter (and still doesn't).

In fact, I expect devs will stop using Steam's opt-in AI disclosures, because doing so clearly does nothing but put a target on your game. If you don't disclose, and no one notices while playing, does the AI even exist?

I have a pet theory that the main reason people are so assmad about AI are literally because of twitter/bluesky fartists being extremely obnoxious and amazingly influential. Remember the the Genocide when Twitter got bought by Elon? And how the number one reason not to leave twitter was some version of "my artists/my art"? And now that AI figured out how to make a picture of Winnie the Pooh smoking a joint, it's Genocide 2. I can't help but notice the parallels.

I'm not even saying AI is great or perfect or without flaws, but the rules are the same as they ever were. A bad game is a bad game, an uninspired game is an uninspired game, a janky game is a janky game. And anyone can always decline to engage with any game for any reason, no matter how arbitrary. Just don't play games you don't like or don't interest you?

*my uncle works at Nintendo.

Thank you Tim Sweeney, very cool. Trumps

“AI is going to get good enough to be unrecognizable, I swear.” Mike

“Meanwhile don’t call me out for using it as shitty and cheap as possible. With those games I suddenly love.” Egomaniac

“Is not my contrarian brain talking.”

Also, want to now why I sometimes act a little vindictive, ask Potato.
I think it’s less about “good enough to be unrecognizable” and more about my certainty that it already goes unidentified or misidentified right now, today!

See Eurogamer’s mealy mouthed statement about how they can’t call out what is AI in Call of Duty because they haven’t been explicitly told where to find it. Or that Game of Thrones edition where everyone was shitting a brick about evil AI until the actual artist literally demonstrated their technique.

it is when the US says russia's policies are starving its citizens, and russia retorts oh yeah, well what about your history of slavery and racism

it is not when when you accuse someone of saying the n word and then they say but wait, you just said it yourself yesterday

I bet she had to fight to be this transparent and people are just glancing over it, creating their own little reality.

Now that I think it about it… the reason why Kanata was allowed to be critical on her retirement announcement is because she didn’t mention her disease. Yeshrug

Reminding everyone about her disease puts Cover in a worse spot as they didn’t accommodate a senior employee that they hired knowing she had a debilitating illness. The agency was famous for being pretty accommodating to the talent before they went public and lost of bunch of performers, including big ones like Gura.

What I’m saying is that pretending her condition was not a reason to leave the company just play better for the corpo PR in the long run. The reality is that both her and her agency knew that his condition was a time bomb, so is telling that she mentions the work load suddenly becomes too demanding for someone that was hired with company people knowing that needed special needs (and the whole reason she become a vtuber was because, at the time, was the place were she could accomplish her life goals as an entertainer with her disease).

I imagine she also agrees that the company are in their right to let her go if their terms become so much for her, that’s why the split was sudden, blunt but at least partially amicable. Just that denying that her illness didn’t play on that, specially because is known she was a hard worker in spite of that, is a disservice for working people that actually have life altering conditions.

TL;DR Corpo benefits more if people don’t associate her disease with her retirement since she was going to leave with a critical statement on the company anyway. But fans can connect the dots.
