I tried it out and thought it was solid, but unfortunately for them, I've been bit by the Marathon bug so I've just had very little interest in keeping engaged with Highguard unfortunately.

If Marathon wasn't around the corner, I'd probably be playing it quite a bit more.

Seeing Concord be eviscerated last year, and now this game torn to shreds (I legitimately think Highguard is a modest step down in quality on the whole, though it is still good/should be quality enough to have a small but dedicated audience), it fully bears out why I gave up on wanting to work in this industry.

Concord would have been a game I'd have truly loved to have my name associated with. Highguard to a lesser degree, mainly because I just don't like its aesthetics as much. BUT, it's still more of the kind of game that's my speed than pretty much the vast majority of big, successful multiplayer games out there nowadays. It's just a shame.

It's really shitty when you feel like you are an audience that isn't really being catered to within the multiplayer video game space, then when you actually do start to get pieces of software that somewhat speak to you in how they look, feel, play and are designed, the greater gaming culture makes it their mission to either outright tear the shit down or go out of their way to pretend like it doesn't exist. A bunch of jackals, everywhere.

A part of me wonders if the bottom is just going to entirely fall out on pretty much the entire tech sector, games and otherwise. Especially with the AI bubble burst looming too.

They could drop it this weekend after the State of Play, it's plausible. Next weekend is also pretty plausible, but maybe they drop it after the SoP and run it a full week+ through next weekend. That'd be very exciting and I think a full week with two weekends to trial the game would work best for them and the game. The game's got a bit more going on, it's less approachable/"pick-up-and-play" than other games so giving more free trial hands on time for that reason too could make sense.

And I think they similarly should have given a lot more free hands on time with Concord too pre-release. That they could have beaten the narrative that formed if they had more patience and allowed more people to get more hands on and allow the positive word of mouth to generate more.

Valentine's Day weekend is actually a pretty good weekend to do an Open Beta for this I think, because this is really going to be a game where intimacy comes out on top (teehee). The game should work great for a competitive gaming couple and their third wheel buddy LMFAO. The best teams are going to be the ones who communicate the best and are most selfless for one another, the ingredients most necessary for a good relationship.

Not only all that, but Bungie has had a history of recognizing and celebrating Valentine's Day within their games too.

After watching a ton of Alpha footage back, it really is very impressive how much they've evolved and refined the game's aesthetics and atmosphere in the year since. The ViDoc already did a good job of showing off how much the game has visually matured, but for whatever reason that BiliBili video on the Chinese event really made the improved visuals stand out to me even more.

The game actually does look a lot more faithful to the aesthetic look, feel, and tone of that initial CG teaser, which is excellent. A great fusion of clean and clinical with grimy and decayed.

I still hope they drop the Open Beta this weekend after the SoP. I think two full weekends+ and the full work week for people to trial it makes a lot of sense the more I've thought about it since posting the thoughts yesterday. Though maybe they are going to be very precious with this and not give people "too much free samples" and instead just limit it to the one weekend two weeks before release. To avoid the classic demo peril of people having enough fun with the freebie. Though I think this was the exact trap they fell into with Concord and its marketing.

But man, if I were calling the shots, I'd absolutely have a big flashy unveil for the game + beta at the SoP then open the floodgates on the game afterwards like MS did with the surprise drop of Halo Infinite's MP.

Was thinking that they could also carry forward the beta progress into retail, to really get people on the metaphorical hook too. Though if that's considered a bit too degenerate for the playerbase, maybe they could wipe beta progression but allow for some kind of rewards/things to be collected forever from playing the beta. Whether that's some cosmetics or what, idk, but they definitely could be creative with this game and giving people incentives to play the beta. They've done similar with both Destiny and Halo back in the day, so some "I played the Beta" trinkets are probably on the menu, bare minimum.

But if they are going to advertise it at the SoP then make us wait a week for the beta, I hope they at least show off enough stuff to tantalize. And that they use the week to really ramp up marketing to generate interest. Would prefer the beta shadowdrop, two weekends + work week for a beefy hands on, but if they aren't doing that and wish to be more selective/teasing, then the very least they can do is to really ramp up even more hype marketing in that week.

I am definitely of the opinion that the beta hits either this weekend or next, and that if it were me, I'd do the full week with back-to-back weekends. That surely they won't wait until the weekend before release to run it.

And man, watching this, it's so clear that Concord really was the true spiritual successor to Shadowrun 360 and Reach. What could have been man... :'(

At some point we have to do something about the pipeline to the right that is so easy for our youth to fall into.
