So sometimes Harry Potter comes up as it will with a varied general membership. When it does I make an effort to try an educate people on Joanne's... Activities. Always I am met by pushback from the admin on the site. Today we were told to not bring up the "trans debate" after someone said essentially: "I don't agree with Jkr but I'm going to share a HBO subscription with my neighbour so I can watch it guilt free."

And he was rightfully called out by me and some other members.

In response to the admin's warning about not discussing transphobia I called them out and said it's not a debate. Then I was given an official warning and I'm just sad. I liked that place but we're not welcome there. It's too uncomfortable for cis people to be reminded that we are suffering.

If “violence works” is supposed to justify using it, then pointing out that white men historically used violence to secure power isn’t really an indictment of violence anymore. Like they both said, it’s an example of the strategy succeeding. You can’t both point to domination as proof that violence works and then treat the fact that one group successfully dominated another as proof of that group’s moral depravity without explaining what makes one use of violence legitimate and the other illegitimate.
If someone says, “violence works” as an answer to “violence isn’t the answer" what the fuck are you even saying?

This isn't directed at you, because I know you're just saying the creators have a different view of Bayonetta than a lot of her fans so expecting much out of them is likely to end in disappointment, but it does make me frustrated in how basic discussion around this stuff has to be on the wider forum.

One of the downsides of gamers being unable to handle Sexism 101 without it becoming 500 pages of sticking heads in the sand, is there is a lot of complexity in how people feel about representation in an industry not run by people like them. I never liked Bayonetta, but she was a main character when women weren't leading in a lot of games and owned her sexuality in a way that a lot of games never approach, even today. So many are dolls that haven't had a sexual thought in their life, which isn't human at all, or they avoid the topic of relationships outside a few lines of dialogue.

Now, Kamiya didn't have altruistic intentions behind creating a character like her, but that's where death of the author comes in. Sometimes you feel seen even if no one is actually looking at you. However, the second you admit you like something that has obvious problems, others will use it to bludgeon you as a "see, you actually love sexualization" with no nuance, because they don't actually care about women's feelings and how difficult it is to hold on to anything in a world that doesn't make things for you. Sometimes you create blinders as a way to deal with that reality. Women love to be sexual, women love fashion, women love camp. It never surprised me they loved Bayonetta or feel like she is "above" objectification, even if those here know that she isn't.

Also a lot of this. I think its gonna come down to the personal takes and subjective feelings on a character and context. I know we're more likely to get openly LGBTQ+ characters in media now in positive depictions (not enough, but more than before. Younger me would've loved to have a protagonist like Luz when I was figurin my shit out lol); but a lot of people grew up with the rarer stories depictin it, or gravitated to cahracters they could relate to or find some common feelin towards.
