It's something I plan to do far less of in the future, despite it being something I really do find some joy in.

Mainly because, and I don't know what it is about us as a community , but so many of us absolutely love to try and 'tear down' threads. To try and find a 'gotcha' that brings down the OP's entire point in one fell swoop, or to try and find a loophole in a fun hypothetical. To treat a thread as this hostile thing that needs to be taken down a peg as quickly as possible.

A perfect example of it happening to me can be seen in a thread I made a while back, on what people would do if given the reign to a hypothetical Metal Gear Movie series:

https://www.resetera.com/threads/youre-given-1bn-to-create-a-metal-gear-movie-franchise-what-do-you-do.1329442/

You know, an innocent fun 'what-if' scenario. One that I'd hoped would generate discussions on casting, release orders, how to adapt a bunch of otherwise-disparate and weird-ass games. That sort of stuff. I put a bit of time drafting up a set of rules and a context that would make it more than just the thread's title. Yet, for the slight mistake of framing said question around financing, half the posts are just "lol I'd run off with the money." The same joke, over and over. No good long-form discussions had. A scant few decent ideas posted. Just cynical jabs for a brief laugh. At that point, I asked for the thread to be locked because it felt like a bit of a lost cause. Really though, it's something I see far too often in respect to how few high-effort threads I see. An OP takes time to write a detailed, interesting thread, only for the thread to be practically rejected for one reason or another. Not argued against, but simply rejected because of one reason or another.

And I do think this all has a dampening effect on what kind of threads we see here. Why put in the time and effort to make a detailed, high-effort thread when you very-easily run the risk of seeing dismissals, mockery, if not outright hostility. Why make a fun, detailed thread game if the community itself is never going to take it seriously? There's just not much point to it all. Hence why the vast majority of the threads we see here are news threads, or basic question-and-answer threads. Both of which are completely valid, but it really does make browsing this place tiresome when that's the bulk of what you're ever going to see.

My issue is, I just don't know how we can really fix this. Or whether anyone would ever want to fix it. Or, hell, whether anyone even sees it as an issue. More stringent motivation isn't going to work for a multitude of reasons. A 'high-effort thread' award or sticky or whatever might encourage more of those, but it doesn't really help the issue of people seeing said threads in a negative light, and I doubt it would see much usage anyways.

I don't know. Sorry for not being positive here but this has been something I've been thinking about for a long while and I wanted to get it off my chest.

I've seen a lot of Black folks weighing in on this, some saying "don't use us to vote shame" while others say, "yo, you not voting is just empowering them and you should be called out for it", and while we aren't a monolith and we all think for ourselves, the underlying consensus is clear: we vote for the most viable option because our literal survival depends on it. To do otherwise is to invite a return to the days of nooses, attack dogs, and fire hoses. We know to a tragic, intimate degree what the other side envisions for us. When I hear "Make America Great Again," it doesn't sound like prosperity; it sounds like a return to a time when I could be pulled over and killed in the street with absolute impunity. Without even the PRETENSE of justice. Where I could be paraded around like some trophy. We bled just to get the bare minimum of human recognition from this country and we are still fighting just to maintain that incremental progress.

Do we want faster, more radical change? Absolutely. We are still battling the exact same systemic racism my father and grandfather fought decades ago. But we are also deeply aware that the alternative isn't just a fuckin political disagreement. it's a faction that wants our total subjugation, if not our complete fuckin annihilation. Hell we ALL KNOW they would gladly put us back in chains if they could. So, will many of us hold our noses and vote for a flawed, ignorant, and stupid candidate over a hate movement that actively wants to string us up?

You're damn right we will.

Here is the hard truth that might tick some people off: many other minority groups in this country do not carry the specific, generational trauma that we do. They haven't had to endure centuries of violence just to claw back a shred of humanity after being legally classified as livestock, families separated and sold on auction blocks, women and children raped while men were hunted for sport and subjected to the worse forms of humiliation and torture imaginable just for giggles.

So when I see folks from other minority groups declaring, "How dare you tell me how to vote, the Democrats hate me just as much! Look at what they are saying/doing!" I have to give them the side-eye. Because to me, it sounds like, "I'm willing to risk letting the people who enslaved, lynched, and brutalized your ancestors take power just to show my disdain for them." I empathize with your struggle, but my reality is sfreakin harsh. I have two choices: side A views me as a threat that needs to be caged, killed, or re-enslaved. Side B might be indifferent to my everyday struggles, but they aren't actively trying to sic the literal dogs on me and string me up for looking at their daughter.

So when it comes down to it I'll always choose the side that lets us survive to fight another day and where progress is historically possible, where people can still be pressured to do better, vs the side which is waiting to not only throw my bones in the fire over a laugh, but also set every other group save for white people, back 100 years.

Those days never actually left.

What do you think is happening to us in the cities when Democrats install surveillance states and Cop Cities? What do you think has always happened to us in the countryside when Republicans just legislate away all manner of civility and social services? What do you think happens in the suburbs when liberals and conservatives alike find out one of us had moved in? What do you think is happening to Black folks on the African continent by the US and its allies in like France and Saudi Arabia? Praytell why did Ukraine in the beginning of the war prevent Black people from leaving before white folks?

You admit it yourself. We're still fighting the same racism that our ancestors did. The difference is that a lot of our ancestors were more ready and willing to blow the head off of crackers who were about it and were more interested in learning and acting upon revolutionary theory in order to work for a world where this shit was a thing of the past, because they truly knew what time it was.

Meanwhile our middle-class asses got taught that watered-down history you mention where things magically got better once we got the right to vote and Reagan gives us Black History Month, that Marxism was never in the story of our development as a people in this country, and our biggest goal becomes to strive to get a Black imperialist in the White House to bomb and coup our brothers and sisters in Africa and South America. What a great fucking story we've written as a generation of Black folks! Malcolm X and Fred Hampton are surely proud!

And I'm not even saying it's not our fault that things have turned out this way. We got fucked over. We're all products of counter-conditioning against our best interests by capitalists because our best interests run counter to capitalist domination, and there was absolutely an urgent necessity to condition Black folks into assimilative and bourgeois attitudes because it is asking for war to have 13% of the population ready, organized, and willing to die for liberation. We've received the worst brunt of federal and media-originating psy ops while still getting the shit kicked out of us by systemic racism. It's an attack on two fronts.

But that lack of fault in the state of things today doesn't mean we aren't now in a position where a lot of us act like these same white liberals who mask off don't give a shit about other minorities beyond the short-term calculus of voting in some blowhard neoliberal piece of shit to merely maintain their hold on their exploitative standard of living in a dying empire that in a better world should've honestly been dismantled decades ago. It's not our fault, but it is our responsibility, as Coates said, to take up that torch from our ancestors and destroy the boot.

Ultimately I just refuse to be lumped in with the rest of you liberal Negroes. If we all ain't free, none of us are fucking free. If you think the trans person regardless of race or the Palestinian child deserves to be sacrificed for your ends, then you are absolutely justifying for a world where white folks will sacrifice us to achieve theirs. Fuck that. It's freedom for everyone or freedom for no one; my life isn't more valuable than anyone else's. And that starts by conditioning ourselves to stop accepting the Democratic Party as the best we can ever do.

Chrome Hyena wrote:*sighs* okay. We doin this here on ERA too.

So let's start by getting one thing straight right out of the gate: I am not some liberal Van Jones clown puttin on the minstrel show for the Democratic establishment. Fuck em. They are a means to an end.

I also think at the end of the day we both actually want the exact same thing. We both want the empire dismantled and true, collective liberation for everyone. But where we fundamentally diverge is that I'm operating in the reality of the moment, and you are partially wrapped up in performative revolutionary fantasy shit.

You are absolutely right about the diagnosis. They sanitized our history, scrubbed the Marxism out of the civil rights movement, and the Democrats are right there building Cop Cities and funding imperialism abroad. None of that is up for debate nor did i. But quoting Malcolm X and Fred Hampton while romanticizing some imminent uprising completely ignores the absolute reality on the ground right now and what an actual revolution requires.

You talk about our ancestors being ready to blow heads off. Some were, and they were assassinated, incarcerated, and their movements were methodically dismantled by COINTELPRO because the state possessed overwhelming and organized power. True revolution isn't just a mood it requires mass organization, dual power, robust supply lines, and unshakeable community infrastructure. Reading theory and grandstanding about ideological purity while refusing to engage in tactical harm reduction doesn't build that infrastructure. It just leaves the most vulnerable members of all communities completely exposed to the shitstorm (like we all currently are).

I am a realist who has actually put the work in. (As i spoke about before) When I say I'm on the ground, I mean I was out there in the streets of my home state of Missouri dealing with the very real, physical violence of the state just to keep my folk safe (kids) while they protested, you realize very quickly that **accelerationism** is a luxury belief. It's a gamble usually taken by people who secretly think they won't be the first ones lined up against the wall when shit actually hits the fan.

Letting outright fascists take total control of the state apparatus doesn't magically awaken the masses to overthrow capitalism either, it just hands the state the absolute power to crush whatever fragile resistance and organizing power we have left.

I agree with you 100% that if we aren't all free, none of us are free. Sacrificing trans folks or Palestinians on the altar of domestic comfort is a betrayal of everything we are supposed to stand for. But explain to me how handing the keys of the empire over to literal Christo-fascists helps Palestinians? How does it protect trans people? It doesn't. It just ensures the boot on their neck turns into a fuckin axe, with ours right underneath it.

Voting isn't a love letter to a broken system; it is choosing the terrain we have to fight on tomorrow. We both want to rip this shit up ultimately.

But until we actually have the numbers and the organization to do it, I am going to choose the neoliberal that can be pressured, protested, and maneuvered around over the fascist enemy that actively wants us extinct. I'm doing it so we survive long enough to actually win the war you're preaching to me about.

It's not our fault, but it is our responsibility, as Coates said, to take up that torch from our ancestors and *destroy the boot.*

Nepenthe's perfect confidence that Marxism works and raises living standards rather than just rearranges power and control over a shrinking amount of resources, is funny considering she still doesn't know what adults actually do on a day-to-day basis at a real job that isn't meant for teenagers.  There’s no knowledge behind the certainty, no evidence whatsoever to justify the beliefs.  A normal person who wanted to completely destroy and overhaul an economic system would at least need some combination of knowledge, experience, and evidence showing why the easier alternative...fixing what they believe is wrong with the existing system would be futile and then also having to convince other people to go along with it.  Not her, though.  A freakish combination of absolute certainty with no self awareness about what she does and doesn't know.

also, lol at that wall of text talking about how the state, feds, and police crushed black revolutionary movements and sanitized history only to turn around and argue that the solution is to give that same state even more control over society, police, and the economy. lol  No no no no you don't understand, we're gonna have that power, and we're gonna use it to crush other people.

I suspect none of this comes from evidence and it's all personal and emotional to her because she so badly wants a state to obtain security, resources, and power for her because she 100% understands that she does not believe she can reliably get it herself in the existing system.  She knows she sucks at being valuable to others in the market and being able to take care of herself like other adults. But the rub (thx bdubs) is that the state she wants strengthened would still be controlled by the very majority she distrusts and resents because she's a minority in America.  That's obviously a problem, so she weasels the argument around and lies and dresses her philosophy up as universal liberation: everyone will be equal, everyone will get what they need, and nobody will be dominated.  Even though her rhetoric is hateful and violent against a group of people she resents, she TOTALLY wants to give them equality too, guys.  No, i'm super serious.  Concentrated power will totally become acceptable because the right people will get in and treat everyone equally including the crackas my ancestors blew the heads off of.  She's such a petty little liar.  The real goal is gaining enough institutional power to redistribute resources to the people she identifies with and punish people she believes have historically been on the winning side.  That's it. That's what it always is.  Just own it and say it.   Wheres the fucking dog costume that i ordered bitch??

Those days never actually left.

How can you take someone seriously when they argue that there's no difference between today and jim crow era. For Nepenthe's position it's important that there's no progress and never has been, so that's what she'll insist on

it's gonna be a really dark day on era when they finally realize that's actually the case. That they've already lost this war and the normies think it's all crazy talk. That's why all the opportunistic dems are starting to pivot on it. No one is gonna wanna be caught on record cosigning surgeries for trans kids.

It's even more pathetic that Nintendo keeps putting achievement/trophy shit in their games anyway, except it's just in a far less useful, self-contained way; you'll then see the types who are supposedly so happy to not have them trying to get all the stickers in a Mario game. It's honestly pathetic on Nintendo's part, just feels like sour grapes that they didn't come up with it themselves so now they have to keep pretending they aren't useful and/or desired by players.

You can still have skins, now others just don't need to see that gimp shit. Best of both worlds.

Edit:

Nah. If anything, his take is so bad that he deserves even more hate.

Strangereal is one of the best things Ace Combat has, and he is incapable of associating with it because “is not real” Mike .

I agree with this guy, if someone is deeply unfunny, believe it or not, straight to jail. Not reading the thread and repeating same shit too? That’s jailtime bucko

I take the money and run xDDD x100 damn dudes thats hilarious, please give us more
