I'm about two and a half months out from the end of a major relationship, and I think I'm teetering on the edge of wishing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was a documentary.

I've been through a lot of emotional pain in my life, but none of it comes remotely close to this. Day after day, memories of the good times flash through my head like boiling acid, one after the other. It makes it so hard to even function. I received a grant for a writing program to generate a complete manuscript of nonfiction over the course of 13 months. The program starts in about a week. It's perhaps the greatest opportunity I've ever had to realize my dreams, and it's going to be a lot of hard work...and I feel I am at my absolute weakest. I feel broken. Even feeding myself, getting out of bed, basic stuff, are so hard to do.

I know this guy wasn't good for me. I wish it hadn't ended badly, but maybe there was no other way for us (all of my closest friends had predicted it would end very badly). But like...he could touch my skin and make me feel happy and calm. I have never slept as peacefully or soundly as I did in his arms. The sex was incredible. And despite the bad parts, we had so much fun together. My life feels smaller without him.

I know the standard advice. Shave the gym, hit your beard, grow a head. I haven't been able to get there yet. In the beginning, actually, it was easier. When I was angry at him, and free of the problems in the relationship, I felt lighter. But as time goes on it just gets harder.

I have other prospects. There is this sweet guy who is really into me. I'm keeping him at arms' length because I don't want to hurt him, and because he's not what I want. I tried to fuck away the pain with several guys, in fact, but it just made it worse. I felt nothing for any of them. I'm thinking about going celibate for a little while. The sweet guy I mentioned, I made it clear that we are just friends who fuck sometimes, but I think even that is too much, especially knowing that he wants much more than that, more than I can give him right now. Sometimes I feel even lonelier when he is here.

Vent over. That's all. This has been the hardest week since the breakup, and I've made lots of regrettable choices in that time. Hopefully this is the bottom. I dunno what I'm looking for, I think I just needed to type all this out. I'm trying to exorcise this feeling and nothing is working.

Can we please start moving toward disallowing Twitter embeds as the sole content of a post? At this point, unless the entire text is in the preview, these are basically black holes in discussion. People are getting half-information (which breeds mis/disinfo) or just holes in the conversation entirely if tweets don’t load. But with people not being able to see unless logged in, it’s just going to get worse. I know it’s a massive shift but it is making conversations on the forum more and more jagged and uneven.
I have zero issues if people want to add the text but a tweet alone should be discouraged.

I'll say upfront that I've been hands-off on the acquisition thread/s because a lot of it is just over my head as someone who's never been especially interested in related discussions. I also feel uneasy about the elevation of figures like hoeg. But what dubs said about essentially losing a potential peer group is true in that - and I'm just explaining how it is not playing violin over it - there's a reason most people asked turn down being on staff. Depending on the person it can be choosing between what's good for their established friendships or the broader community. And there is no wrong choice there.
Having said that, how can I stay true to my original stated goal of wanting era to improve and become more welcoming if I am scared of our own userbase. What unsettles me is how users treat each other. The shadow boxing is unreal. The baiting and the gotchas and the discord brigades, all of it. If someone has doubts about a post, there is no attempt at conversation that follows. 'You feel this way, prove me wrong' is a manipulative game that no one can win, so my advice is don't even play. And yeah the whole internet is kinda shitty, but maybe it doesn't need to be. I feel guilty for avoiding many threads and I want to know what I can do better.

If anything, staff posting those robotic-ass messages is what makes me uneasy (and sometimes I never liked even back when I was staff - they're mods on a video game forum, not fucking Congress addressing their representatives lmao).

"Power imbalance", come on... if someone wants to shitpost about some musician or video game why would you feel "uneasy"?

That said, I agree staff should be held to at least the same standards as normal users which is why I find it appalling whenever I've seen a staff member throw insults around freely. Fortunately this very rarely happens, but yeah...
