The Bire fans — we’ve been listening closely to your feedback since the launch of The Bire on PlayStation 5 and PC and want to thank everyone who has joined the journey aboard the Northstar. Your support and the passionate community that has grown around the forum has meant the world to us.

However, while many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognize that other aspects of the forum and our initial launch didn’t land the way we’d intended. Therefore, at this time, we have decided to take the forum offline beginning September 6, 2024, and explore options, including those that will better reach our players.

While we determine the best path ahead, The Bire sales will cease immediately and we will begin to offer a full refund for all Gamers who have purchased the forum for PS5 or PC. If you purchased the forum for PlayStation 5 from the PlayStation Store or PlayStation Direct, a refund will be issued back to your original payment method.

Customers who purchased from other digital storefronts will also be refunded. More information about refunds from Steam and Epic can be found below:

Steam Store – Steam Store will refund players who bought the forum over the coming days. Steam will send confirmation of the refund once it has been processed.

If it goes F2P, wonder if progress will be carried over.

Unlikely, because in order to go free to play, a lot of the systems will have to be reworked, and to be "fair" to the incoming free to play players, they'll probably have to reset progress, so everyone starts at the same level.

It's bullshit, but I imagine they're going to try and minimize any griping points folks will have if the game does get a relaunch.

Personally, I'm not terribly confident the game is going to get a relaunch. I'm sure the folks at Firewalk would be down for it, if it actually manages to catch on, but I'm not sure if it'd be worth the investment to try and rework the game as f2p.

It reminds me so much of the bullshit that happened to the character of Rose in The Last Jedi, where the chuds were so vocally toxic, that her role was pretty much cut in The Rise of Skywalker. And I don't care what excuses Lucasfilm came up with for why Rose wasn't in the movie more, the optics clearly felt like they were spooked by the discourse around Rose, and cut her out of the film beyond a few lines.

I just really hate when the chuds win, and, unfortunately, they once again won. The hate campaign against Concord that was waged from the very first teaser trailer did its job. It depressed interest and turnout, and the various influencers that created content for months dooming the game got the desired result. And now they're going to spend the next few days, maybe even weeks, farming the "What went wrong with Concord?!!" well, completely ignoring the role they played in contributing to it's toxic reception, while they're viewers clap like seals and bang the "woke" and "DEI" drum, and the influencer gets tons of views and revenue from that content, while the folks at Firewalk busted their ass on a really good to great game that was a victim of daring to not be a predatory microtransaction fest with big tiddy anime waifu character designs.

God, it's just so depressing and infuriating. This is why we can't have nice things.

I don't want to hear a peep from certain folks lamenting live service and f2p games, but i know that's never going to happen.

There was a chance to show the industry that good games that don't nickel and dime players do have a market.

I'm also pretty heated by the "why release a game in an oversaturated market?!" comments, since, in my research after hearing this news, there aren't really any other games that played that Concord.

Like, is it really that hard to comprehend that games in the same genre can play fundamentally different? Persona doesn't play like Final Fantasy, despite also having a turn based battle system. Concord doesn't play like Overwatch, or Apex Legends, or XDefiant, or whatever.

I enjoyed how Concord played. That's what I want to play. If I wanted to play a Battle Royale, or if I wanted to play a game with Ultimates, I'd be playing those games.

The reductionist way in which we talk about games ("oh, it's just like this game but has this thing instead of that"), is such a double edged sword. Sometimes those comparisons can be apt, but you wouldn't really have people saying that Black Myth Wukong is just like Bloodborne, but set in a China.

So much of the discourse around Concord was comparing it to Overwatch on such a superficial level, with any attempts to highlight why the game isn't a carbon of it being shouted down. And then we have Marvel Rivals... No shade on Marvel Rivals, because I love Marvel, but it's not really what I want to play, and it being free to play just sets off my alarm bells that there's going to be the typical battle passes and FOMO that I hate about free to play games, and why Concord was so appealing to me.

This is so disappointing, and just makes me so mad for the devs. Firewalk did a great job, full stop.

As a fellow dev, nothing stings more than seeing talented people punished for making a good game.

I think of the folks at Arcane who recently lost their jobs, despite making some of the best immersive sims out there. I think of Tango Gameworks, shut down, and only because Krafton saw the value in them were they saved, but we might not see their next game for a while still anyway, since Hi Fi Rush came out not that long ago.

We're in a very vulnerable spot in the industry right now. Developers and studio's livelihoods are at risk in a way we haven't seen in an incredibly long time. Possibly since the gaming crash of the 80's. I don't think the market is going to crash, but I very much see the industry contracting over the next 5-10 years, with even more "safe" titles releasing outside of maybe the indie scene, where the cost of development is cheaper, but dev times can be longer because of the lack of resources and team sizes. Solo devs can take years to make a game. Small teams the same depending on the genre. We're still going to get our AAA "blockbuster" or "tentpole" titles, but they're going to be fewer and farer between, like they kind of already are.

Working in this industry is so fucking anxiety inducing, I swear. Releasing a game and crossing that finish line was always this moment of excitement and celebration, and now it's just so much stress and anxiety, especially in the world of influencers that can heavily color perceptions of your game that reach potentially millions of gamers, it's terrifying.

I can't help but agree with you. There was an unbelievable amount of disdain for Concord before it even released, and from people who hadn't even played it once it did. Maybe that's partly on Sony for the marketing approach, but it still didn't deserve the reaction it got. Feels like it was instantly targeted and set upon by the super loud and aggressive folks coming from that side of the net, which heavily tainted the general perception surrounding the game.

People are just...nastier these days. All too ready to pile on something that doesn't appeal to them; all too ready to point and laugh when it trips up. It's like the gaming community as a whole never matured past high school. Plus the "teachers" and role models we have in the media and creative spaces are not helping matters. We really need to actively speak up if we want things to improve, and for more games like Concord to be given a better chance.

The space has been ceded to these people.

Speaking from personal experience, the answer is the smart people dip out in the cover of night without so much as saying a word, never to be seen or heard from again.

Read your post in full - as always - and I really appreciate your voice in this space. Ultimately, I don't believe the chuds "won". They like to frame it as a battle, but really when we lose a title like Concord, we all "lose".

And while I do agree with your sentiment, I think the chuds did win this one. They were never going to engage with this game in good faith period. They were content to attack it from afar, with no skin in the game, and spread their toxicity and taking the conversation away from what the game was doing on its own merits that warranted more folks giving it a chance (and this also applies to the countless influencers who were tripping over themselves to post numerous "destined to fail?!" "analyses" of the game before it even launched and not a single one of them had seen the game, let alone got to play it), and that was enough to turn off enough people that don't necessarily go on forums, but maybe they watch youtube videos, or have a friend, coworker, or family member that is parroting all the negative talking points, and they just figure the game isn't worth their time.

Even when you had some folks like the ones at Easy Allies or Kinda Funny talking about how much they enjoyed the game, it was being attacked "Oh, you guys are being paid to say good shit about the game! LOL! FAIL!"

Nothing about this game was being engaged with with any sort of open mind or good faith analyses. Then folks are coming out of the woodwork to pat themselves on the back for "predicting" that the game would bomb, yet not a single one of them, in their expert knowledge of the industry and what will, or will not, be a success, predicted that Helldivers 2 would blow up like it did when it launched. Because it's significantly easier to predict a failure than it is a success. Outside of some legacy IP, or developers with strong track records, predicting a "win" in this industry is incredibly hard.

Hell, not a single person on the net would have anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 having the disastrous launch it did (in terms of performance on the PS4 and Xbox ONE), but that game was a financial success, and sold millions despite it all, but the point is that it's just not that easy to see where things are going to go when it comes to the positive, profitable side of the coin. Any game can bomb. Even the Wii U bombed, after coming from the massive success that was the Wii.

But back to why I think the chuds won. They won because they were never going to play Concord. They were never going to give it a fair shot. They weren't going to buy the game, even if it scored 9's and 10's and had an 90 Metacritic. They won because they succeeded in denying myself, and many others that were enjoying the game and supported it day one, from getting to play the game come Friday.

I won't even be able to boot it up and play some local multi-player, or host my own server and play with others and continue to chip away at my variant unlock and other unlockables. They killed the game. They didn't lose out on anything, because they were never invested in the game outside of seeing it fail. And they got their wish.

It's fucking gross. The hostility shown towards the devs with this behavior is just pathetic, and toxic, and, unfortunately, it sends the message, whether true or not, that if they keep trashing and attacking the things they don't like, maybe those things will go away, and publishers and studios will start making the types of games that they want to see, and fuck anyone else that may have enjoyed what the team put together for us.

They were still gonna get the types of games that appeal to them. That's always been the case. It's why it's easy for me to just ignore the games that don't pique my interest and invest in the games that do. Not every game is my cup of tea. I have no interest in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 because of the gamer gate chud running the show, but that's okay. I don't have to trash that game and tear it down. I can just not spend my money on it and call it a day.

But these fuckwits will continue to attack anything they don't like, and will be buoyed by clout/engagement chasers online that will post countless videos trashing it that will reach millions, potentially turning off gamers that probably wouldn't care about things like pronouns, or diversity, or "unconventional" character designs, and just want to play a good game. But when the discourse paints a grim picture, or discourages people from supporting it because of fear of low player counts, or good old fashioned disinformation about the game, that has an effect on the game, and the devs that worked so hard to just make a good fucking game.

So, yeah, I think the chuds won this round, as did the influencers getting thousands and thousands of views on their videos trashing the game because some folks love a train wreck and want front row seats to the carnage.

It's so damn infuriating, and this isn't the last game that's going to see this fate, I guarantee it, unfortunately.

Folks are already tuning up the band for Fairgame$, and throwing out their "Oh man, if I was Haven Studios, I'd be sweating right now!" takes. They're licking their chops at another potential sacrifice to their negativity and anti-dev rhetoric.

Sorry for another rant, I'm just really angry and disappointed. I feel this way about any good game that fails, especially when the reasons for it failing are just so fucking stupid.

Fwiw, you shouldn't spoiler this. It's important that people have their feelings validated. It's healthy to vent, and it's normal to feel frustrated, particularly in this case. And honestly, one of the primary reasons why I spoiler my posts is that I tend to write a lot in my posts (bit of an understatement, really XD XD ), and to spare the folks reading on their phones, i found that spoilering my posts might make it easier for them to scroll and read the threads I post in without having to scroll for an eternity past my walls of text! And no, I totally didn't experience that myself while scrolling through threads on my phone and seeing my post and just kept scrolling, and scrolling, and scrolling...XD

But yeah, the thing that really stings the most is that I'll no longer be able to play the game after Friday. After finally having some new characters I didn't play much clicking with me, and getting into the groove of my freegunner rotation during matches (i'd go Recoil Reduction, Range Increase, Mobility Increase, Reload Speed Increase, then my main if they're not taken already; if they are, I'd choose one of the previous characters, or some other one).

I played a little today during my lunch break, and it was such a bittersweet feeling, though I did still manage to have a lot of fun, and some really close games that made the inevitable shut down sting even more. It's just so much damn, fun to play! :(

I was thinking about this last night actually...

I look at the absolute slew of third-person crafting/survival games that come out every month that all seem to find an audience and it got me thinking, is this a problem with the "Shooter/FPS" genre? I mean, the genre has been around for decades, and you need to be incredibly special in any sub-genre to make any impact whatsoever.

Scrolling through best seller lists, steam stats etc and it's just big hitter after big hitter (CS2, COD, Apex, PUBG, Rainbow 6 and... nothing else?)

Yeah, I honestly have no idea!

I'm not a big MP player, and I'm also not a big FPS player, so really don't know if there's something about the genre that is viewed/perceived differently by some circles.

Like you said, there's a shit ton of crafting/survival type games, and there's a shit ton of Metroidvanias, RPGs, adventure games, etc, etc, but from my research, there really aren't a lot of hero shooters, and especially ones that are drawing massive crowds, so it just reinforces in my mind that so much of the "oversaturated market" complaints leveled at Concord is just bullshit being spouted in bad faith.

Yes, there are other hero shooters out there, and yes, games like Overwatch sit atop the throne, but, like, so what? If it's a genre that clearly has an audience, why not expand that audience and give them more options to choose from when maybe they git tired of OW?

I'll never complain that a new RPG is coming out, or a new roguelike, or a new Metroidvania. The more the merrier for me. Concord is the first game in its genre that hooked me. I don't have any interest in the others, and so far, from what I've heard (as I haven't played a lot of these other hero shooters), none of them really play like Concord, which is, like, the main reason why I enjoyed the game. I liked its particular approach and what it was doing, and it doesn't seem like any of the other 4 or 5 hero shooters (wow so oversaturated!), are doing the same thing.

The more I think about losing this game, the angrier I get about the whole situation. I guess I'm just gonna go back to playing my single player games exclusively like I did before. It was nice to have something more "pick up and play" for a few rounds in between playing games like Persona, BG3, Dragon's Dogma 2, Rise of the Ronin, etc, etc. :(

In college sports this especially matters because those spots and victories are tied to scholarships and opportunities. If Thomas or any other trans woman never gets higher than 4th that's still shunting every single other woman down a single spot which can mean the difference between a scholarship and nothing or a spot on a national team and nothing.

But they laser in on the wins or first place finishes as if that's what matters. They're trying to take advantage of the good faith intrinsic in ignorance to convince people to just DISMISS THE CONCERNS rather than actually look into them. It's the same thing they do with every single issue on this topic whether it's bathrooms, other women's spaces, "medical care", kids, etc. They try to manipulate it so your concerns aren't valid while demanding their concerns take priority over all of society.

Not for nothing, the chud sphere has landed a couple victories lately. That Star Wars show flop. Concord and Dustborn flops. Even Lizzo is trying to lose weight.

They’ll try and take credit for those failures. But it was more a self goal.

It has now been 10 years after Gamergate.
What strikes me today is everyone involved got exactly what they deserved.

The majority of filth that justified harassing women in games are career failures. They are still doing nothing with their lives. A few of the more prominent ones are still doing their sad act, creating low-rent ragebait, which I suppose is their career destiny

The darkest irony is so many “SJWs” that enjoyed being in a culture war have become Gamergate. The tactics are the same. The harassment is the same. It was always about power to them. Not principals.

The few people on the Gamergate side that were interested in higher principles like

have gone on to do interesting things. I’m proud to have developed friendships with him and Hat,  Shoe and Lauren and a whole bunch of other people.

As for myself, I do miss the game industry. I think that if Gamergate had not happened  my life would look very different. I would be leading successful game dev teams and pursuing funding, hopefully leading the way inside the industry for reform.

But it did happen, and I did pivot and redefine myself. I make good money and I have a job I care a lot about where I get to help change public policy. I’m proud that I didn’t stand still and let it define my whole life.

I’m more proud of the fact that when my own side became Gamergate, I was willing to speak out about it. That was a test of integrity and as best as I can tell, no other progressive figure involved with the shitshow sees it or is willing to say it.
